ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) is the world’s most widely recognized certification scheme for software testing professionals. Whether you’re just starting out in QA or aiming for a test management role, an ISTQB certification validates your knowledge and gives you a credential employers actively look for. Below is a breakdown of each certification level, what it covers, and who it’s for.

Foundation Level

The starting point for anyone entering software testing. Foundation Level covers core testing principles, the test process, static testing, test design techniques, test management basics, and tool support. Most testers take this first — it’s a prerequisite for every Advanced Level certification. (Link to your ISTQB Foundation Level: Complete Guide once published)

Advanced Level – Test Manager (CTAL-TM)

Built for testers moving into leadership. CTAL-TM covers test planning, monitoring and control, risk-based testing, managing test teams, and stakeholder communication. This is the certification most closely tied to the “Test Manager” and “Test Lead” job titles. (Link to your CTAL-TM guide)

Advanced Level – Test Analyst

Focused on the practical side of test design and execution — black-box techniques, defect analysis, and structuring test cases against requirements. A strong fit for testers who want to go deeper technically rather than into management.

Advanced Level – Technical Test Analyst

The most technical Advanced Level track, covering white-box testing techniques, code-level test analysis, and non-functional testing (performance, security, usability).

Specialist – Performance Tester

The ISTQB Certified Tester Performance Testing (CT-PT) certification validates your knowledge of performance testing, including performance metrics, test planning, execution, analysis, and performance testing tools.

It is ideal for testers and performance engineers who want to develop specialist skills and demonstrate their expertise in performance testing.

Expert Level

For senior professionals who want to specialize further — covering areas like test management, improving the testing process, and security testing at an expert depth. Fewer people pursue this level, but it’s the top of the ISTQB pathway.
